The Hunting Party is American rock band Linkin Park’s sixth studio album. The band chose to depart from their recent electronic rock sound and simply produce a rock record. A year in the making, the record produced three singles: “Guilty All the Same”, “Until It’s Gone” and “Final Masquerade”.

Breaking away from Rick Rubin, with whom they had a three-album association, Brad Delson and Mike Shinoda co-produce this time around and retreat from the moody electronica that characterized many of those records. Instead, The Hunting Party is designed as a return to rock, evoking the group’s earliest records. Reconnecting with the past is a standard move for a heavy band 15 years into its career, but The Hunting Party is effectively aggressive, partially due to how far into the ether Linkin Park strayed on Living Things and, especially, A Thousand Suns. Written and recorded over the course of a year, The Hunting Party nevertheless packs a visceral punch. Hints of the murky, meditative darkness linger — especially on “Until It’s Gone,” which builds upon its atmosphere to reach melodramatic heights; “Final Masquerade” is subtler in its approach -– but there’s good reason why Page Hamilton and Tom Morello both guest on the record: this is a grinding, metallic workout. Far from sounding as if they’re grasping at straws, Linkin Park seem rejuvenated, proving there is value in the cliché of returning to roots.

The seventh full-length release for the rock band features guest appearances from Kiiara, Pusha T and Stormzy. The album also includes Jon Green, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Ross Golan, Michael Leary, Andrew Goldstein, blackbear, and Eg White as co-songwriters. One More Light was promoted by the band by various acoustic performances by Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda of the lead single at many promotional live events and interviews.

One More Light, Linkin Park’s seventh set, is a divisive and brazen statement from a band that already does not shy away from fearless experimental leaps. From the rap focus on Collision Course and the Fort Minor side project to the electronic A Thousand Suns and their remix albums, Linkin Park have balanced an empire built upon pain and angst with an admirable dose of cross-genre dabbling. Which is why One More Light shouldn’t come as such a surprise. And yet, the album remains a jarring follow-up to 2014’s muscular The Hunting Party and an overall curve ball in their catalog. Recruiting electronic pop producers like Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Jesse Shatkin, and RAC, Linkin Park made a pop album, which is sure to infuriate diehards who yearn for the days of “shut up when I’m talking to you.” While it’s unfair to fault them for not being pissed off anymore, the experience is not the same. For the first time, the band sounds happy and content. Though while they may be at peace, their creativity took a bullet. There’s a bevy of bright tropical notes and even some “na na na” choruses, tones that are dime a dozen on pop radio. The group is effectively neutered on One More Light: there’s no feral screaming from Chester Bennington, there are barely any riffs, and DJ Hahn has disappeared beneath the textured studio sheen. The closest they toe to “rock” is “Talking to Myself,” which has discernable live drumming from Rob Bourdon and guitar licks from Brad Delson. Otherwise, One More Light is mostly concerned with triumphant anthems (“Battle Symphony” and “Invisible”) and heartfelt confessions (“Sorry for Now” and “Halfway Right”) that end up sounding like the Chainsmokers blended with Twenty One Pilots. Certainly, One More Light will find its defenders, but for fans of their past work, “Good Goodbye” with rappers Pusha T and Stormzy is the closest they come to “aggressive” and “inspired” (even if Shinoda sounds like G-Eazy). Oddly enough, the Kiiara-assisted lead single “Heavy” ends up being one of the only memorable earworms on the album, an undeniably catchy dose of radio-friendly pop that dares listeners to sing along. Here, Linkin Park actually lay out the entire plot of this endeavor by asking “Why is everything so heavy?” With the bandmembers all hovering around their forties, they’ve matured and fully expect fans to do the same, taking huge steps away from the nü metal that established them in the early 2000s. Objectively, that attitude is refreshing, but nonetheless a letdown. From their inception, Linkin Park connected through catharsis. However, many of the emotions presented here are fleeting. The issue isn’t that it’s a pop effort; indeed, they get points for a brave attempt so outside of their wheelhouse. The problem is that much of One More Light is devoid of that visceral charge that previously defined much of their catalog. It’s a provocative challenge that ultimately fails to satisfy.

Tracklist:
01 – Nobody Can Save Me
02 – Good Goodbye (feat. Pusha T and Stormzy)
03 – Talking to Myself
04 – Battle Symphony

Other traditional religious favorites like “I Saw Three Ships” and “Away in a Manger” are also featured, in a setting that, with its well-arranged orchestral accompaniment, manages to sound both sophisticated and folksy.

Arranged by Dave Cavanaugh, A Mis Amigos is Cole’s 1959 gem and second album of Spanish themed music. This rare outing is an astounding experience for any music lover. The legendary musician interprets songs including “Ay, Cosita Linda,” “El Choclo” and “Caboclo Do Rio,” transforming them into instant classics.

The songs on A Mis Amigos are truly terrific and the album’s flow from soft balladry to pulsating Cuban/South American percussion makes it a distinctive recording from Nat King Cole…a different glimpse at an American icon. – Blog Critics

Nat King Cole’s first foray into singing in Spanish, Cole Español, was successful enough to lead to this follow-up, on which a slightly different approach was taken. For Cole Español, Capitol Records imported instrumental tracks recorded in Cuba and had Cole sing over them, having learned the lyrics phonetically. A Mis Amigos, however, was recorded in Rio de Janeiro during Cole’s South American tour of 1959, with Brazilian musicians in the studio alongside the singer. That, the benefit of experience, and the reception his concerts were receiving may have helped improve his performances. He still didn’t have much feeling for Spanish (or, in three instances, Portuguese), but some of the material was more familiar to him, notably “Aquellos Ojos Verdes,” better known in the U.S. as the Jimmy Dorsey hit “Green Eyes,” and “Fantastico,” a specially written number brought in by American songwriters Jack Keller and Noel Sherman.

Cole Espanol is the legendary musician’s 1958 classic. The unforgettable recording showcases Cole’s rich musicality, memorable vocals and unmatched versatility. With the orchestration recorded in Havana, Cuba, this remarkable gem includes the standouts “Tu, Me Delirio,” “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas,” “Maria Elena” and much more. Cole’s undeniable star power shines throughout.

Nat King Cole addressed his growing international following with Cole Español, on which he sang in Spanish. Although he did not speak the language, he learned the song lyrics phonetically. Nine of the 11 selections had backing tracks recorded by conductor Armando Romeu, Jr., in Havana, Cuba, in February 1958, with Cole adding his vocals in Hollywood in June. The other two, “Cachito” and “Noche de Ronda,” were cut with Hispanic musicians in Hollywood under the direction of Capitol Records’ Dave Cavanaugh. The tunes were a mixed bag of Latin standards including Mexican mariachi music (“Adelita”) and even the Italian “Arrivederci Roma” (sung in Spanish), and Cole’s vocals were augmented by the Rivero Quartet and other uncredited singers. While that no doubt was intended to shore up his tentative performances, it actually showed him up, as the native Spanish singers offered a painful contrast to his own pedestrian readings of words he did not understand and pronounced with no flair. (On one track, “Tú, Mi Delirio,” he abandoned the microphone for the piano to delightful effect.) Cole’s singing voice was as smooth and attractive as ever, which must have helped, though, and the album’s sales — it reached the Top 20 in the U.S. and was a big hit internationally — indicated that Spanish-speaking audiences were flattered that an American singer would try so hard to communicate with them in their own language.

More Cole Español is the compelling third installment of songs sung by the legendary musician in Spanish. With arrangements by Ralph Carmichael, the album displays Nat King Cole’s rich versatility. This thrilling collection features hits including “Tres Palabras,” “Vaya Con Dios,” “No Me Platiques” and much, much more.

More Cole Español was Nat King Cole’s third album of songs sung in Spanish, following Cole Español (1958) and A Mis Amigos (1959). Recorded in Mexico City with Mexican singers and musicians, but arranged and conducted by Ralph Carmichael, the collection demonstrated that Cole had made significant advances as a singer in Spanish in a few years. Cole Español had found him providing tentative, phonetically learned syllables over pre-recorded tracks imported from Cuba, giving him the sound of someone trying to avoid making mistakes. A Mis Amigos, cut in Rio de Janeiro during the South American tour promoting Cole Español, was better, but still not a truly complete fit for Cole. He still didn’t sound like he always knew what he was singing, and he still seemed to be working on his pronunciation, but on More Cole Español he was clearly having a lot more fun. In part, this had to be because the arrangements were more rhythmic and uptempo, and Cole must have been taking enthusiasm from the Mexican musicians who accompanied him. And he must have been more familiar with material that included crossover hits like “Vaya con Dios.” Whatever the reasons, More Cole Español was his most successful effort at making music for fans south of the border.

Recorded in the wee small hours in January 1960 in front of a select crowd of casino guests and other Las Vegas entertainers, this album was billed at the time as Nat King Cole’s only live recording. Accompanied by a big band arranged by Dave Cavanaugh, Cole plays piano and sings standards and old favourites including The Surrey With The Fringe On Top and Miss Otis Regrets.

This rare example of a Nat King Cole live recording captures one of the 20th century’s greatest singers in fine voice in 1960 at the Sands, the Las Vegas headquarters of the Rat Pack. The band swings expertly through its sophisticated charts courtesy of legendary arrangers like Nelson Riddle and Dave Cavanaugh, and Cole demonstrates his command of a wide range of styles, from ballads like “I Wish You Love” and “Funny (Not Much)” to show tunes like “Thou Swell” and “Surrey with the Fringe on Top.” A few bonus tracks are also featured, including a late-’50s studio recording of Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” and Cole’ sniffy take on the then-still new rock & roll craze, “Mr. Cole Won’t Rock & Roll”. ~~ AllMusic Review by AllMusic

This 1957 release from Nat King Cole peaked at number 13 on US album charts and marks the last album Cole recorded with jazz flavour. Despite being billed as a trio recording, Cole is joined on these sessions by musicians including Harry “Sweets” Edison on trumpet and other guests contributing sax, violin, trombone and even bongos.

In this felicitous blending of Nat “King” Cole’s supreme talents as jazz pianist and vocalist with small combos featuring fellow jazz alumni, classic pop and jazz met in a wildly successful brew. A combination of new and familiar songs are featured, including fresh recordings of classic hits like “Route 66”. Musicians include Harry “Sweets” Edison, Juan Tizol, Lee Young, Stuff Smith and Willie Smith augmenting his famous Trio. In addition to the full original album, five additional tracks and two alternates take from the original sessions are included in this release. Mellow, classy, focused and vibrant, After Midnight was a hit and an instant classic upon its release in 1957 and remains a gem to treasure today.

Once Nat King Cole gave up playing piano on a regular basis and instead focused on a series of easy listening vocal albums, jazz fans longed for him to return to his first love. These 1956 studio sessions made up Cole’s last jazz-oriented disc, where he played piano and sang on every number, joined by several guest soloists. Cole’s vocals are impeccable and swinging, while his piano alternates between providing subdued backgrounds and light solos that don’t reveal his true potential on the instrument. Willie Smith’s smooth alto sax buoys the singer in the brisk take of “Just You, Just Me.” Harry “Sweets” Edison’s muted trumpet complements the leader in his interpretation of “Sweet Lorraine.” Composer Juan Tizol’s valve trombone and former Cole sideman Jack Costanzo’s bongos add just the right touch to the brisk take of “Caravan.” Stuff Smith’s humorous, unusually understated violin is a nice touch in “When I Grow Too Old to Dream.” It’s hard for any Nat King Cole fan to ignore these important sessions

„Shadows – Songs of Nat King Cole“, has been an idea brewing in Hugh’s mind for a few years. Cole was one of the Jazz artists that Hugh’s mother often played in the family home and his music became part of the soundtrack of Hugh’s formative years before his mother’s untimely death when he was 7 years old. After having released and toured two self penned albums distinctly pop on Universal records, Hugh was invited to tour and record with French/Italian Jazz pianist and producer Eric Legnini. This experience of a working Jazz musician gave him the confidence to finally approach Nat King Cole’s repertoire.

The idea behind the album was born of Hugh’s intention to shed light upon the darker part of Nat King Cole’s life. That of a black musician, active at a time when segregation was rife and most black artists entered music venues by the service entrance. Indeed Cole himself narrowly escaped a kidnapping in 1956 in Alabama and even though successful, he was clearly not welcome in Beverly Hills where he received threats from the Klu Klux Klan soon after the family’s arrival. Cole stated: ‘I can’t understand it … I have not taken part in any protests. Nor have I joined an organisation fighting segregation. Why should they attack me ?”. Hugh’s idea was to reveal these “Shadows”, rarely if ever evident in the choice of material or production of Cole’s work. The choice of songs, production and Hugh’s vocal performances on Shadows, often rooted in his passion for the Blues, give an undertone of tension, even unease.

Notwithstanding Hugh’s original idea, when he came to record the closing title for the album, Morning Star, an ode to a mother’s love, it became clear to him that this project was in fact, much closer to home. Shadows… is Hugh paying homage to his mother, through the work of Nat King Cole.
