FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192kHz  | Time – 37:30  minutes | 1,55 GB | Genre: Rock

Recorded: Skyhill Studios, Hollywood/ Muscle Shoals Sound/ Paradise Studios, Grand Lake of the Cherokees, Tia Juana, Oklahoma

Leon Russell’s third album marked a change in direction. His first two releases were a sort of high-spirited revue, with numerous players and gospel-influenced backup singers. Where his self-titled debut and its follow-up (And The Shelter People) wedded blues, R&B, rock & roll, country and other genres, „Carney“ is a pared-down setting of equally well-endowed songs that make their mark in a much quieter manner. Russell’s first two albums had been veritable celebrations, but „Carney“ sounds more introspective. Some of Russell’s most loved songs made their first appearance here, including the often-covered ‘Tight Rope’ and ‘This Masquerade.’ Russell stayed introspective on his subsequent release „Will O’ The Wisp“, but „Carney“ remains one of his very finest efforts. The gorgeous songs and subtle arrangements make for a wonderfully sustained album experience.

“Tight Rope” leads off Carney, and it’s not just his biggest hit, it offers an excellent introduction to an off-kilter, confused, fascinating album. In a sense, it consolidates his two extremes, offering a side of fairly straightforward roots rock before delving headfirst into twisted psychedelia on the second side. On the whole, the second side deflates the first side, since it’s just too fuzzy — it’s intriguing, at least in parts, but it never adds up to anything. Besides, the first side is already odd enough, but in a meaningful way; here, his fascination with Americana sideshows is married to songs that work, instead of just being vehicles for tripping in the studio. Of course, part of what makes Carney interesting is that it contains a bit of both, but interesting doesn’t equal compelling, as the whole of Carney bears out. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Leon Russell and The Shelter People is the 1971 gem by multi-instrumentalist and music icon Leon Russell. The album is comprised of eight Russell originals, two Dylan covers and Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness.” It is a full display of Russell’s gifts as an instrumentalist and his abilities to produce timeless Rock & Roll classics. Russell’s soulful talents shine through on the tracks “Of Thee I Sing,” “Home Sweet Oklahoma” and “She Smiles Like a River.” Leon Russell and The Shelter People finds Russell at his prime and is an important document in his illustrious career.

Leon Russell’s accolades are monumental in a number of categories, from songwriting (he wrote Joe Cocker’s “Delta Lady”) to session playing (with the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, just to name a few) to his solo work. Unfortunately, it’s the last category that never really attracted as much attention as it should have, despite a multitude of blues-based gospel recordings and piano-led, Southern-styled rock albums released throughout the 1970s. Leon Russell and the Shelter People is a prime example of Russell’s instrumental dexterity and ability to produce some energetic rock & roll. Poignant and expressive tracks such as “Of Thee I Sing,” “Home Sweet Oklahoma,” and “She Smiles Like a River” all lay claim to Russell’s soulful style and are clear-cut examples of the power that he musters through his spirited piano playing and his voice. His Dylan covers are just as strong, especially “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and “It Takes a Lot to Laugh,” while “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” and “It’s a Hard Rain Gonna Fall” have him sounding so forceful, they could have been Russell’s own. A hearty, full-flavored gospel sound is amassed thanks to both the Shelter People and the Tulsa Tops, who back Russell up on most of the tracks, but it’s Russell alone that makes “The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen” such an expressive piece and the highlight of the album. On the whole, Leon Russell and the Shelter People is an entertaining and more importantly, revealing exposition of Russell’s music when he was in his prime. The album that followed, 1972’s Carney, is an introspective piece which holds up a little better from a songwriting standpoint, but this album does a better job at bearing his proficiency as a well-rounded musician.

Leon Russell never quite hit all the right notes the way he did on his eponymous debut. He never again seemed as convincing in his grasp of Americana music and themes, never again seemed as individual, and never again did his limited, slurred bluesy voice seem as ingratiating. He never again topped his triptych of “A Song for You,” “Hummingbird,” and “Delta Lady,” nor did his albums contain such fine tracks as “Dixie Lullaby.” Throughout it all, what comes across is Russell’s idiosyncratic vision, not only in his approach but in his very construction — none of the songs quite play out as expected, turning country, blues, and rock inside out, not only musically but lyrically. Yes, his voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but it’s only appropriate for a songwriter with enough chutzpah to write songs of his own called “I Put a Spell on You” and “Give Peace a Chance.” And if there ever was a place to acquire a taste for Russell, it’s here.

This debut album was credited to Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina because the project had begun as a solo record by Loggins being produced by Messina. By the time it was finished, however, Messina had written or co-written six of the 11 songs, contributed “first guitar,” and shared lead vocals on many tracks. Messina’s “Nobody but You” and “Vahevala,” co-written by Loggins’ second cousin, Dave Loggins, were the singles chart entries, but today everybody remembers the album for Loggins’ “House at Pooh Corner,” which had earned Loggins his record contract, and “Danny’s Song,” which Anne Murray took into the Top Ten the following year. The only thing wrong with this record is that it was too perfect – with their infectious blend of country, folk, rock and Caribbean music, L&M started out at the top of their game, and although they were able to match some of the material and performances on later records, the team never got any better than this.

While Loggins and Messina created many fine albums this one stands out as most representative of their impact. In the early ’70s the duo pioneered true country/rock and showcased it with style and near-flawless performances.

The eponymously titled 1972 Loggins and Messina album built on the strengths of their debut outing, “Sittin’ In.” The same mix of short catchy country-folk-pop gems with longer intricately layered and meaningful ballads bordering on jazz and edgy rock powered its success. The album reached #16 on the Billboard charts and “Your Mama Don’t Dance” charted at #4. The epic “Angry Eyes” became an instant FM radio staple reaching the top of the college radio and AOR charts.

This Loggins and Messina album has many varied textures and arrangements. A little bit of country, a number of quality ballads and some good old rock ‘n’ roll. Their backup band was anchored by multi-instrumentalist Al Garth, and also featured keyboardist Michael Omartian and Poco steel guitarist Rusty Young.

The Loggins and Messina album became the true introduction of the band, Loggins and Messina, not as soloists playing together, but rather as a duo that offered pure genius in their music.

The first full-fledged L&M album found the duo in good form as songwriters, with Messina turning in the sparkling “Thinking Of You,” and the two collaborating on the hit single “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and “Angry Eyes.” Their backup band was anchored by multi-instrumentalist Al Garth, and also featured keyboardist Michael Omartian and Poco steel guitarist Rusty Young. –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

The orchestra became much wider & deeper on the soundstage, with the flute solo in the Moldau front & center with greatest clarity & presence…” ~audaud.com

Luciano Pavarotti has long avoided doing the kind of solo crossover release often proffered by his Three Tenors comrades Plácido Domingo and José Carreras; indeed, in his liner introduction he claims that he was initially “very skeptical” of this project. He came around, though, and the result marks his first solo album of any kind in years. Catty opera cognoscenti hoping for an embarrassment may be gratified by a few booklet photos (keep that shirt on, Luciano!), but otherwise they’re out of luck. The music is actual modern Italian pop rather than the sort of international sentimental style that seems to have been dreamed up in a marketing department, not a music studio. The songs included are mostly originals (several by producer Michele Centonze), and though they vary in quality they don’t rely on the kind of flabby familiarity that can doom a crossover project artistically. (An adaptation of Nino Rota’s old Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet will please Three Tenors fans.) The style is vocally oriented and suits Pavarotti well; electronic accompaniments are quiet and rarely compete with his voice. The singer even has fun with the quasi-rock & roll title track and with a portrait of the aging Caruso, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar. His age is clearly audible, but he’s still got it. Some have suggested that Ti adoro represents an attempt on the part of Pavarotti’s label Decca to compete with the current crop of teen-classical crossover divas. If so, the attempt is misconceived and proves little – except that he could teach them a thing or three. On its own terms, however, it works just fine. You might even wish he’d done it ten years ago, but even so you won’t find another 68-year-old who can sing with this kind of verve.

It has been a fruitful few years for local singer songwriter Maeve O’Boyle as she prepares for the release of her debut album. She has planned a show with the guys from Intimate Gigs at The Georgian Hotel in Coatbridge. Maeve has been writing songs since the age of 13 and the 21-year-old has now matured into one of the finest talents to emerge in Scotland in many a year. Her debut album titled All My Sins is a culmination of years of hard work and a steady recognition in the industry of her burgeoning talent. She first started to attract attention when she won the Danny Award at the Celtic Connections festival and winning the Daily Record’s Search for a Star competition. The album has taken several years to record and is an outstanding piece of work, with producers Calum Malcolm (The Blue Nile) and Stuart McCredie (The Fratellis) bringing out the best in Maeve’s voice. The album also features a host of well known Scottish talent including legendary fiddler John McCusker and Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. Writing the album also afforded Maeve the opportunity to write with some of Scotland’s most respected songwriters including Ricky Ross from Deacon Blue who commented: “When Maeve sang for me I thought she was fantastic. I could listen to her voice all day. She’s up there with anyone”.

Sony should issue this recording at birth to everyone! It’s simply amazing! I originally heard Bernstein do this performance live and have lived with it ever since it was issued, first as LP then as CD. However, with this Japanese SACD issue, it’s like I’m really there. It comes to life like never before!
Mahler’s 7th Symphony, the “Song of the Night” as it is sometimes called, is perhaps Mahler’s most ambitious symphonic work, in five movements with two “nachtmusik” movements as the second and fourth movements, and a brilliant rondo as the last movement where the light finally breaks through. This recording is among the most acclaimed of the all the Mahler 7 recordings, superbly played and recorded with life-like brilliance.
My only complaint about the SACD issue that Sony makes us pay a usurious price. Do they think that only the Japanese enjoy SACD quality, and make the rest of us pay through the nose for it?

One of the greatest masters of flamenco guitar in a landmark l963 recording with singers Jose Reyes and Manero Baliardo on four of the ten tracks. This is the raw, real stuff of flamenco, putting the listener in the middle of the gypsy campfire scene. The entire heart and soul of this gypsy goes into his emotional music. The recording venue was a medieval chapel and the acoustics are perfect, both for the echoing castanets and shouts, as well as the increasing ability of SACD reproduction to preserve such subtle sound reflections. If your only exposure to such gypsy fire is the Gypsy Kings, get a load of the real thing with this disc.

Miyuji Kaneko was born in 1989 to a Japanese father and a Hungarian mother. At the age of six, he moved to Hungary alone to study under Zsuzsa Cs. Nagy at the Bartok Elementary School of Music. In 2001 at the age of eleven, he was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, skipping grades and studying with professors Gabor Eckhardt, Gyongyi Kevehazi, and Rita Wagner. He has won first prizes in many international music competitions, including the 2008 Bartok International Piano Competition.

This recording of piano works is the second title from ESOTERIC label, produced by bringing together the knowhow of ESOTERIC and Octavia Records, with the goal being a high-quality DSD recording primarily targeting audiophiles. The resulting recording promises a new level of excitement by bringing to the listener not only high sound quality, but also the captivating musical power embodied in the original works themselves. The piano was recorded with two sets of microphones; one was set at the audience position, and the other one was set at the player’s position. Both takes were individually recorded on SACD layer, in order that listener can compare track-by-track.
