Released in 1971 but unavailable on CD for many years, One Dozen Roses from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles includes the reappearance of the huge hit song The Tears Of A Clown, a multi-million selling number one single in both the US and the UK, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The song also holds the distinction of being the Miracles’ first (and only) number one hit with Smokey Robinson as lead singer.

One of their better latter-period albums. Though the singles (“The Tears of a Clown,” “I Don’t Blame You At All,” the lovely “Satisfaction”) were the focal points of the set, the real gem is “No Wonder Love’s a Wonder,” a haunting, socially conscious ballad where Smokey Robinson speaks the lyrics as the Miracles harmonize in the background. It marked one of the few times Robinson ever engaged in social commentary. –AllMusic Review by John Lowe

Flying High Together is an album by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles on Motown Records’ Tamla label, released in 1972. It is noted as The Miracles’ last studio album with original lead singer Smokey Robinson, who retired from the act to concentrate on his duties as Vice President of The Motown Record Corporation. The album charted at #46 on the Billboard Pop Album chart. As of 2016, Flying High Together has yet to be issued on CD, but several of its songs have shown up on various Miracles foreign and domestic CD compilations.

The last studio album they recorded together as a group, it was produced by Johnny Bristol, who was by then experiencing career problems of his own. While none of the songs are Robinson originals, the album does contain several cover versions and tunes by Ashford & Simpson and Stevie Wonder. Although it was a cohesive, servicable disc, it lacked the clarity that made their earlier records (with Smokey at the helm) so special. Still, it gave the group their last Top 40 hit with “We’ve Gone Too Far to End It Now,” which also cracked the R&B Top Ten.

Tracklist:
01 – I Can’t Stand To See You Cry
02 – Theme From Love Story
03 – We’ve Come Too Far To End It Now
04 – Flying High Together

Smokey Robinson invented a style of songwriting and singing that influenced artists as diverse as James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Boyz ll Men and Linda Ronstadt, to name just a few. Smokey’s gentle, sensual vocals are effortlessly delivered but completely captivating. No less an authority and devoted fan than Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson, ‘the greatest living poet in a America today.’ 1975’s „A Quiet Storm“ contains all the patented Smokey touches: the sweet irresistible melodies; the slow-dancing ballads; the jump-for-joy love songs. You can’t go wrong with a Smokey Robinson record, no matter what it’s decade of origin, but this is perhaps his definitive ’70s album, defining a smooth, contemporary R&B style that would be emulated for decades to come. As exemplified by „A Quiet Storm“, Smokey’s gift is constant and genuine.

The genius of William “Smokey” Robinson is immeasurable. As many of his prior songs had shaped R&B and pop music, this album would have a similar effect. The title track became the namesake for a music format. The album itself had three singles hit the charts. Arranged in an intermittent rhythm, “Baby That’s Backatcha” ran up the Billboard R&B charts to number one inside 16 weeks. It was Robinson’s first number one single since leaving the Miracles. The lyric of the ballad “The Agony and the Ecstasy” hit the Top Ten at number seven, and it was followed by the masterpiece “A Quiet Storm.” Although it only managed to seal the Top 25, it has since made a greater impact on the music charts and music industry. Briefly, radio mogul Cathy Hughes, owner of Radio One, was the general manager at Howard University radio WHUR during the early ’70s when she created the format “the quiet storm.” She used Smokey Robinson’s composition as the theme song. Before long, it caught on around the country and evolved into a new market. This album also features the “Wedding Song” which was written for Hazel and Jermaine Jackson’s wedding and the “Happy” theme from the movie Lady Sings the Blues. –AllMusic Review by Craig Lytle

A Pocket Full Of Miracles (TS306) is a 1970 album by Motown Records R&B group The Miracles,(AKA “Smokey Robinson & The Miracles”) issued on its Tamla subsidiary label, one of three albums the group released that year. This album charted at #56 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and reached the top ten of the magazine’s R&B albums chart, peaking at #10. It was released on September 30 of that year. Hit singles on the album included “Point It Out” and the topical Ashford & Simpson written-and-produced song “Who’s Gonna Take The Blame”, a sad, dark song about a girl that is turned out as a prostitute (unusually serious lyric content for The Miracles). Also included is the charting flip side “Darling Dear”, B-side of “Point It Out”, which reached # 100 on the Billboard pop chart, and spawned a cover version by The Jackson Five.

The album’s name takes its title from the 1961 Frank Capra comedy film Pocketful of Miracles. However, that is where the similarities end. Its cover depicts four of The Miracles, Smokey Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, and Ronnie White, sitting inside a huge cartoon “pocket”, (thus the name “Pocket Full Of Miracles”). Other original songs in the collection included “Flower Girl”, the powerful potential hit “Backfire” (that was not released as a single), and the melancholy “The Reel Of Time”. Miracles members Marv Tarplin and Claudette Robinson are featured on the songs “You’ve Got The Love I Need” (a ballad with rock overtones) and “Don’t Take It So Hard”, respectively. However, they are not featured on the album’s cover (apparently because the “pocket” would then have too many Miracles). Covers include versions of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water”, Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown’s “Something You Got”, included in a medley with The Beatles’ “Something”, and Smokey’s composition for The Temptations, “Get Ready”, which features an arrangement borrowed from the Cream hit “Sunshine of Your Love”. Motown staff songwriters contributing to this project included Ashford & Simpson, William “Mickey” Stevenson, H. Gordy, R Gordy, R. Jones, and Miracles members Smokey Robinson, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin.

This album, like several of The Miracles’ post-1969 albums, has never been released in the CD format. It was re-released in edited form a few years later, by the defunct independent label Pickwick International, under license from Motown, with a different cover, and the modified name Pocketful.

A few good sides make this a fair to middling LP and not one of their best overall. Two single releases, “Point It Out” and “Who’s Gonna Take the Blame,” did all right but didn’t blow up the charts; the latter, a Valerie Simpson/Nicholas Ashford composition, is a teary tale of a girl who turned into a prostitute — heavy stuff for the Miracles. The original version of “Darling Dear” is one of the better tunes here, though a later recording by the Jackson Five is the more popular rendition. Other tunes are competent but fall short of being winners or A-sides. ~~AllMusic Review by Andrew Hamilton

Recorded: November – December, 1981 at Studio Sound Recorders, North Hollywood, California

Yes It’s You Lady is a 1982 album by American singer Smokey Robinson. As 1981’s Being with You it was produced by George Tobin and recorded and mixed at Studio Sound Recorders, North Hollywood, California. It was released on the Motown sub-label Tamla. The album was peaking at #33 in Billboard pop charts, and at #6 on the R&B charts. The two follow-up singles to 1981’s chart success’ “Being with you” were strangely no Robinson compositions: “Tell Me Tomorrow” peaked at #33 Billboard and #3 R&B charts, “Old Fashioned Love” at #60 Billboard and #17 R&B charts. The third and final single, Robinson’s “Yes It’s You Lady” only peaked at #107 Billboard, without entering the R&B charts.

Surprisingly, having scored his biggest solo success with the self-penned, self-produced Being with You, Smokey Robinson turned to an outside producer and outside writers for the followup. Both of the singles from Yes It’s You Lady, which was produced by George Tobin, “Tell Me Tomorrow” (number three R&B, number 33 Pop) and “Old Fashioned Love” (number 17 R&B, number 60 Pop) were mid-tempo rhythm numbers written by Gary Goetzman and Mike Piccirillo. Robinson’s own compositions, notably the title track, which would have made a perfect follow-up to “Being with You,” were de-emphasized. The result was a retreat from the careful career-building Robinson had been engaged in since 1979; the album peaked at only number 33 after three straight Top 20 LPs. It was as though, having established himself as a solo voice, Robinson was now content to be “Cruisin’.” ~~AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

The only album from the Miracles to break into the US top 10, Going To A Go-Go from 1965 spawned four top 20 hit singles, including The Tracks Of My Tears, included at number 50 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The tune was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007 and has also been preserved by the United States Library of Congress as an “culturally, historicall, and aesthetically significance” to the National Recording Registry.

Though its title track ignited a nationwide fad for go-go music, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ Going to a Go-Go LP certainly wasn’t just a cash-in effort. It’s one of the best records the group put out, and the first six songs make for the best side of any original Motown LP of the ’60s (granted, all but one are also available on dozens of Miracles compilations). The four biggest hits were among the best in a set of Miracles archetypes: the throwback to the aching ’50s doo wop ballad (“Ooo Baby, Baby”), the flashy up-tempo dance song (“Going to a Go-Go”), the dancing-with-tears-in-my-eyes jerker (“The Tracks of My Tears”), and the mid-tempo orchestral epic (“My Girl Has Gone”). “Choosey Beggar” is one of the sweetest of all Robinson’s lead vocals, with stunning background work by the rest of the Miracles. Even the album tracks shine, with “All That’s Good” and “Let Me Have Some” working as excellent additions to the program. –AllMusic Review by John Bush

Country Music Shindig is a departure for the Three Suns in that their typical instrumental medley style is applied to a program of country songs — 34 of them in total. The selections seem to reveal a thorough knowledge of country music. For example, the set includes songs that wouldn’t be readily identified with country music today, like “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Crying in the Chapel,” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” all of which were country hits. Then there are obscurities like the Sons of the Pioneers’ “Roses” alongside crossover hits and an occasional oddball like the Broadway tune “Wagon Wheels.” The album is heavier on electric guitar than some of the Suns’ earlier efforts, and is also the last album they recorded with longtime producer and conductor Al Nevins, who died shortly afterward. ~~ AllMusic Review by Greg Adams

While Underworld’s Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have retained what was special about their greatest triumphs – Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Second Toughest in the Infants were two of the most revered dance albums of the 1990s – Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future is never weighed down by its makers’ history. Karl Hyde’s “found” lyrics (using snippets of overheard conversations) are affecting, fractured evocations of the disorientations of modern urban life. Even the album’s title is a real-life utterance, a phrase Hyde’s father said to his mother shortly before he died. Opening track I Exhale has the sleazy ambience of David Bowie’s Lodger, its “blah, blah, blah” motif echoing the “far, far, far, away” refrain of Red Sails. But that and If Rah aside, Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future is dreamy and unabrasive. Gently menacing instrumental Santiago Cuatro has a Middle Eastern feel, while the smooth synthpop texture of the closing track Nylon Strung reaches a state of bliss.  — www.theguardian.com

Recorded: Cadogan Hall, London, 8 & 9 September 2015

This album, reflecting the love affair Pinchas Zukerman has had with English music since the late 1960s, contains the most beloved violin pieces by Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams, the towering figures of the English musical renaissance. Salut d’amour was immensely popular from the beginning but made Elgar virtually no money. The Lark Ascending had to wait until after Vaughan Williams’s death to become renowned throughout the English-speaking world.

The two composers were very different. Elgar, a sensitive, nervous type, was not only lower-middle class but a Roman Catholic and thus doubly beyond the pale. By sheer hard work he made himself into a leading late-Romantic composer, successor to Schumann, Brahms and Dvorˇák and a superb orchestrator. Vaughan Williams, a large, almost shambling figure, had the confidence of being born into the upper class and, starting as an Anglican, became an agnostic. An enthusiastic folksong collector, he loved to compose in a modal, pentatonic manner but behaved rather like a gentleman amateur, often needing help with scoring his orchestral music.

Vince Jones, Paul Grabowsky – Provenance (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 48:40 minutes | 439 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Front Cover | © ABC Jazz
Recorded: The Iwaki Auditorium in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 08/2015

Provenance is the new album from two legends of Australian music – a survey of intimate ballads that showcases the superlative craftsmanship of platinum-selling legendary singer Vince Jones and multi-ARIA-winning pianist Paul Grabowsky.

The title refers to the returning-to-roots that this album represents. Vince and Paul first worked together in the 1980s, when Grabowsky was music director to Jones; Provenance marks a renewed collaboration between the pair after several decades apart. But the word also describes the music which the duo chose to record: ballads that showcase the essential elements of their craft, elements that have been the foundations of their astonishing careers, pared down to the intimate combination of piano and voice (and occasionally piano and flumpet – a hybrid of trumpet and flugelhorn).

Provenance is “a collection of timeless songs with beautiful melodies”, as Vince puts it. The album begins with Rainbow Cake, composed by the pair in the 1980s. Oh My Love, written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, takes on touching poignancy in this new rendition; and from there the album presents classic songs from a variety of genres as well as a number of Vince’s own compositions.

Vince Jones needs no introduction to any music-lover. Renowned for the beauty of his voice and the eloquence of his trumpet playing, he is a genre-defying artist who has played thousands of gigs around the globe, recorded dozens of best-selling albums – and has never been afraid to comment on the world in which we live from an unashamedly idealistic perspective.

Paul Grabowsky has won an ARIA Award every decade for the past forty years (including in 2014, for Best Jazz Album). As well as being a pianist of the utmost sensitivity, he has been a director of some of Australia’s most prominent arts festivals, the composer of nearly 30 feature film scores and several works of music theatre, the founder and leader for 19 years of the Australian Art Orchestra, and an executive at the ABC;
he is currently at Monash University, where he heads up the Academy of Performing Arts.

Timeline is Yellowjackets’ GRAMMY®-nominated debut on Mack Avenue Records. This 2011 album commemorates the band’s unprecedented thirty-year career. Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, Will Kennedy and Bob Mintzer deliver the perfect combination of smooth jazz and post-bop. The album peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums and features the smooth jazz standout “Timeline.”

Contemporary jazz ensemble Yellowjackets’ 2011 Mack Avenue debut, Timeline features the band’s longstanding knack for straddling the line between smooth jazz and more cerebral post-bop stuff. Marking the group’s 30 years in the business, the album is a perfect mix of low-key, soulful moments and more funky, angular jazz. In that sense, it’s a perfect balance of what the band has done throughout its career. Showcased here are members saxophonist Bob Mintzer, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip, and drummer Will Kennedy, as well as guests guitarist Robben Ford and trumpeter John Daversa. Ultimately, with tracks like the disarmingly knotty opener “Why Is It,” the expansive “Tenacity,” and the ruminative R&B-infused title track, Timeline reveals Yellowjackets as a band in a seemingly reinvigorated and creative state of mind. Not a bad place to be at 30. ~~AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 60:00 minutes | 783 MB | Genre: Classical

Recorded: February & June 2009, April 2012, July, October & November 2014 at St George’s Bristol, England

Having previously released recordings of Medtner’s three piano concertos as well as three of Rachmaninov’s five concertante works, Yevgeny Sudbin on the present disc combines solo pieces by the two friends and fellow-composers. From Sergei Rachmaninov’s rich and varied production he has chosen six of the celebrated preludes, including the celebrated ‘Alla marcia’ in G minor (Op.23 No.5) as well as the much-loved Prelude No.12 in G sharp minor from the Op.32 set. But Sudbin, who is a great admirer of Nikolai Medtner, opens his new disc with a generous selection of that composer’s solo piano music. This section begins with the Prologue from Stimmungsbilder, the eighteen-year-old composer’s Opus 1, and closes with Sonata tragica, composed shortly before Medtner left Russia in 1921, never to return. It also includes three of the thirty-some Fairy Tales that Medtner composed throughout his life. ‘No one tells such tales as Kolya’, Rachmaninov used to joke affectionately, and with these pieces Medtner created his own, unique genre. He himself used the Russian word skazka or German Märchen to describe them, and in his liner notes Yevgeny Sudbin suggests that the creative impulse came not only from folklore but also from such diverse sources as Pushkin, Shakespeare and even the Bible. As an interpreter of both these composers, Sudbin has proven himself both in concert and on disc, with previous recordings being named Disc of the Month in Gramophone, ‘Essential Recording’ in BBC Music Magazine and ’10/10′ on ClassicsToday.com, to mention just a few of the distinctions awarded them.
