FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1kHz  | Time – 01:04:25 minutes | 518 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: eClassical | © Naxos Rights
Recorded: Glatter-Götz/Rosales organ at Claremont United Church of Christ, Claremont, California, USA, on 19th and 20th May, 2014

Director and co-writer John Milius’s intention with the 1982 adventure Conan the Barbarian was to create an opera in the form of film. With its power, energy and moments of tenderness, Basil Poledouris’s music supports the storyline in a similar way to a work written for the stage. The superb Glatter-Götz/Rosales organ in Claremont, California was designed to inspire creativity and innovation, and Philipp Pelster’s vision in making a complete film-score transcription especially for the unique possibilities of this instrument transforms the orchestral colours of the original to generate a completely new and richly rewarding musical experience.

The idea of creating an opera in the form of a film was the vision of John Milius, the resulting Conan the Barbarian then having the music of Basil Poledouris added. …Pelster is obviously having a ball putting through its paces this 1998 instrument installed in the Claremont United Church of Christ in California. From the mighty opening for the Anvil of Crom and The Mountain of Power, to the virtually inaudible track, Alantean Sword, the disc’s wide dynamic range is awesome. Pelster makes a plausible replica of a fairground organ in the section Theology/Civilization, and the solemnity of a church organ in Conan Leaves Valeria, though our local Ladies Institute would find The Orgy a very tame affair. Film buffs, and those looking for recorded excellence, will be dashing out to buy the disc… ~~ 2015 David’s Review Corner

Rachel Z – Grace (2005)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 1:02:09 minutes | 1,31 GB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | Digital Booklet | © Chesky Records

On Grace Rachel selects songs by U2, Nirvana, Kate Bush, Björk and John Lennon to mix with her own compositions binding the ten tracks of the album with spare arrangements and universal themes encompassing love, pain and growth. The simplicity of a trio consisting of Rachel’s piano, long-time collaborator Bobbie Rae’s signature drums/percussion and Chris J. Luard on bass, recorded with Chesky’s renowned minimalist miking techniques, creates a most intimate environment for such eloquent material.

“To connect with new listeners without selling out or dumbing down, Rachel has found a way to make the age-old piano trio relevant and fresh to younger ears”- Jazzreview.com

A very talented jazz pianist, Rachel Z. has always been interested in contemporary pop and rock music. Grace is a bit of a surprise for, in addition to her piano playing in a trio, Rachel sings on the majority of the selections. Her voice is expressive but just average and not on the same level as her work on piano. She apparently felt the need to express herself vocally, performing originals with her own lyrics plus songs by U2, Kurt Cobain, Kate Bush, Björk, and John Lennon (a spooky version of “Imagine”). Listeners primarily interested in Rachel’s jazz work will still consider most of Grace of interest because there are many piano solos and good close interplay by the trio even if it is not quite essential. In addition, fans of singer/songwriters who do not mind bits of jazz in their music will find Rachel to be well worth discovering.

Raime – Tooth (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 37:38 minutes | 383 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Bandcamp | Front cover | © Blackest Ever Black

Raime’s second album, Tooth, arrives in June 2016. The widescreen melancholia of their 2012 debut, Quarter Turns Over A Living Line, gives way to an urgent and focussed futurism, in the shape of eight fiercely uptempo, minimal, meticulously crafted electro-acoustic rhythm tracks. The DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms.

No let-up, no hesitation. Needlepoint guitar, deftly junglist drum programming, brooding synths and lethal sub-bass drive the engine. The production is immaculate, high definition. No hiss, no obscuring drones or extraneous noise: the music of Tooth is wide-open and exposed. The seeds of its supple dancehall biomechanics can be found in the self-titled 2013 EP by Raime side-project Moin, an ahead-of-its-time synthesis of art-rock and soundsystem sensibilities, but Tooth pushes the template further, binding the disparate elements together so tightly that they become indistinguishable from one another.

If Quarter Turns was an album that confronted total loss and self-destruction, even longed for it, then Tooth is the sound of resistance and counter-attack: cunning, quick, resolute; calling upon stealth as much as brute-force. At a time when so many pay lip service to experimentation without ever fully committing themselves or their work to it, Raime return from three years of deep, dedicated studio research with a bold and original new music: staunch, rude, and way out in front.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 43:47 minutes | 960 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: ProStudioMasters | © Capitol Records
Recorded: 1988 at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles and Konk Studios, London

Released in 1988, Amnesia is the second album Richard Thompson recorded in Los Angeles with producer and keyboardist Mitchell Froom. Backing Thompson’s characteristic vocals and stunning fretwork are some of the finest musicians in the industry, including bassists Tony Levin and Jerry Scheff and drummers Mickey Curry and Jim Keltner.

Amnesia was Richard Thompson’s second album with producer and keyboard player Mitchell Froom, and the two sounded a lot more comfortable with each other than they did on their previous project together, Daring Adventures. This being a Richard Thompson album, the high quality of the songs and the guitar playing is a given; while Daring Adventures had a few cuts that sounded like padding, Richard comes up aces this time out, and even sounds a bit more upbeat than usual, letting his political side rise to the surface on “Jerusalem on the Jukebox” and “Yankee, Go Home” and rocking out on “Don’t Tempt Me” and “Gypsy Love Songs.” (Be advised that the gloriously sad “I Still Dream” and “Waltzing’s for Dreamers” are on hand to remind us this is a Richard Thompson album.) Froom’s production makes more of a difference this time out; Amnesia sounds brighter and cleaner than Daring Adventures, with a sharp but glossy mix that truly flatters Thompson’s fiery Stratocaster solos (not to mention Jim Keltner and Mickey Curry’s drumming), and the blend of British folk-rock stalwarts (John Kirkpatrick, Phillip Pickett, Danny Thompson) and American session veterans (Keltner, Curry, Jerry Scheff, Tony Levin) makes for a set of tart and flavorful performances. Amnesia is one of Richard Thompson’s best-sounding albums, and not a bad place for beginners; he hadn’t sounded like he was having this much fun since Sunnyvista in 1979. –AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

This Grammy nominated album from Richard Thompson is one of his most beloved and contains his classic 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, often-covered and included on TIME’s list of the 100 greatest songs of all time.

“When I was a kid, (the Vincent Black Lightning) was always the exotic bike, that was always the one, the one that you went ‘ooh, wow.’ I’d always been looking for English ideas that didn’t sound corny, that had some romance to them and around which you could pin a song. And this song started with a motorcycle, it started with the Vincent. It was a good lodestone around which the song could revolve.” –Richard Thompson

While Richard Thompson’s devotees will tell you the man is a triple-threat genius — passionate vocalist, compelling songwriter, and sterling guitarist — even his most loyal supporters will concede that the dour nature of his songs and the no-frills production of many of his albums make the bulk of his catalog tough sledding for the uninitiated. Given this, 1991’s Rumor and Sigh is arguably the best album for those wanting to sample Thompson’s work for the first time. It captures Thompson at the top of his form on all fronts, but also gives his songs just enough polish to make them approachable for the unconverted, and though it’s several shades darker than the average adult-contemporary album, it honors Thompson’s obsession with romantic despair and the less pleasant quirks of fate without sounding depressing in the process. Producer Mitchell Froom tricked up Thompson’s sound a bit, but his approach added to the material rather than interfering with it; the topsy-turvy keyboards and sharp, snapping drum sound on “Gray Walls” and “You Dream Too Much” actually add to their narrative drama, and Froom coaxed some of Thompson’s most soulful vocals on “Why Must I Plead” and “I Misunderstood.” Thompson actually gets funny on “Don’t Sit On My Jimmy Shands” and the darkly hilarious “Psycho Street,” and Thompson fans who like his work straight with no chaser will be knocked flat by “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” perhaps the best traditional-style number in his songbook, and the harrowing “God Loves A Drunk,” an unnerving tale of several kinds of addiction. While Rumor and Sigh is quite slick by Thompson’s standards, its clean lines and bright mix serve both the songs and the bandleader quite well, and make Thompson’s tunes sound like the radio hits they’ve always deserved to be. –AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

The fourth of five albums Richard Thompson would record in Los Angeles with producer and keyboard player Mitchell Froom, Mirror Blue faced the challenge of following one of Thompson’s biggest critical and commercial successes, 1991’s Rumor and Sigh. Rather than repeat what had worked so well previously, Thompson and especially Froom were more adventurous in the studio, turning off both fans and critics. Still, Guitar World included Mirror Blue on its list of the 50 iconic albums that defined 1994.

“… it was a radical record and a brave record, it was off the back of the records Mitchell had done with Suzanne Vega and Los Lobos and the couple of records (engineer) Tchad Blake had done with Tom Waits. All of which I thought were terrific … they all had a kind of character to them, a sound that was really trying to strip away some clichés, like why have a snare drum, why the backbeat? And just looking at the song and seeing what does the song need, what’s going to work?” –Richard Thompson

1991’s Rumor and Sigh was among Richard Thompson’s best-selling and most warmly received albums, even gaining a bit of radio and MTV exposure which introduced Thompson to a wider audience than ever before. But while Thompson has often expressed his desire to reach a greater number of listeners, he’s (thankfully) unwilling to dumb his music down, and it’s probably no coincidence that he followed up his most user-friendly album with the more difficult Mirror Blue. Mirror Blue was constructed on a more modest scale, with the arrangements scaled down and the mix putting the instruments in greater relief. While Mitchell Froom’s production added both polish and punch to Rumor and Sigh, his work on Mirror Blue marked the point where he began to interfere more than he helped; the tinny, crashing sound he imposes on Thompson’s guitar and Pete Thomas’ drums soon wears out its welcome, and Froom’s washes of retro-styled keyboards are more prominent than they need to be. And while song for song Mirror Blue boasts material just as strong as Rumor and Sigh (if not stronger), the tone is more dour, with the few rockers decidedly less friendly (“Mascara Tears” sounds downright mean) and the ballads more mournful (though “King Of Bohemia” and “Beeswing” are beautiful and affecting if you don’t mind a good cry). But Thompson had a great set of songs here, and he performs them with typical fire and precision; his guitar work is glorious, and his vocals are passionate and unusually well controlled. Mirror Blue suggests that, after making an album with the mass audience in mind, Richard Thompson decided to make one for the fans — and himself — and if Froom’s production sometimes gets in the way, loyalists will find plenty to revel in here. –AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Mock Tudor is the ninth studio album by Richard Thompson. Released in 1999, it was his final album released by Capitol Records. For this, his fifth album for Capitol, Thompson teamed up with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, and Mock Tudor had a more straightforward production than his preceding albums on Capitol which had been produced by Mitchell Froom. In this album Thompson draws predominantly on the musical styles of 1960s England—the time and place of his youth. The lyrics have a nostalgic tinge and are rich with allusion to fairy tales and children’s books as well as to Shakespeare and T. S. Eliot.

Just how lost Richard Thompson was under Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake’s direction during the ’90s is made clear by Mock Tudor, the brilliant sequel to the botched You? Me? Us? Producers/engineers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf keep the production clean and direct, allowing the songs to breathe and letting Thompson play guitar. That decision alone would have made Mock Tudor a satisfying listen, but what elevates it into the first rank of his albums is, naturally, the songs themselves. Thompson structured the album as a portrait of suburbia, tackling a different subject with each song. It’s not all about desperation, although there certainly is a lot of that there. Instead, Thompson is at the top of his form, offering subtle shadings in his lyrics and remarkably catchy, memorable melodies throughout the album. As a matter of fact, it’s a bit of a tour de force, opening with the rollicking “Cooksferry Queen” and closing with its polar opposite, the hushed, intimate black comedy of “Hope You Like the New Me.” Between those two songs, Thompson covers all sorts of emotional textures, resulting in his most affecting effort in years. Since even on his uneven ’90s efforts he demonstrated that he still was in full grasp of his talents, it can’t be said that Mock Tudor is a comeback, but it’s certainly the best album he’s made in over a decade. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Richard Thompson earned a Grammy nomination for this ambitious 1996 release, a double album split into electric (Voltage Enhanced) and acoustic (Nude) discs, all produced by Mitchell Froom. Thompson reprises two of the electric songs on the acoustic disc, contrasting his acoustic folk roots with his electric influences.

On the surface, you? me? us? appears to be a major statement from Richard Thompson. Spread out over two discs, the budget-priced album features 19 tracks, separated into an electric (“Voltage Enhanced”) disc and an acoustic (“Nude”) disc, which each runs around 40 minutes; “Razor Dance” and “Hide It Away” appear on both discs. Despite its appearance, you? me? us? isn’t one of Thompson’s major works. What sinks the album isn’t the songs — as always, Thompson has written a handful of gems — but Mitchell Froom’s production. Froom’s gauzy, pseudo-experimental approach masks the songs in an impenetrable haze, which neither Thompson’s guitar nor his voice can cut through. There is no texture to the album’s sound — it is mushy and colorless, which cuts away at the heart of Thompson’s direct, emotional songs. If the songs on you? me? us? were given the simple, direct production they deserve, it would have been a completely different, more compelling experience. As it stands, it’s a wildly uneven and unengaging listen, like the great majority of the Froom-produced Richard Thompson records. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Taj Mahal brings old and new sounds to blues in his 1968 debut. Taj Mahal embraces his virtuosity on the guitar and sets the foundation for the future of his unique interpretations of the genre.

Taj Mahal’s debut album was a startling statement in its time and has held up remarkably well. Recorded in August of 1967, it was as hard and exciting a mix of old and new blues sounds as surfaced on record in a year when even a lot of veteran blues artists (mostly at the insistence of their record labels) started turning toward psychedelia. The guitar virtuosity, embodied in Taj Mahal’s slide work (which had the subtlety of a classical performance), Jesse Ed Davis’s lead playing, and rhythm work by Ry Cooder and Bill Boatman, is of the neatly stripped-down variety that was alien to most records aiming for popular appeal, and the singer himself approached the music with a startling mix of authenticity and youthful enthusiasm. The whole record is a strange and compelling amalgam of stylistic and technical achievements – filled with blues influences of the 1930s and 1940s, but also making use of stereo sound separation and the best recording technology. The result was numbers like Sleepy John Estes’ “Diving Duck Blues,” with textures resembling the mix on the early Cream albums, while “The Celebrated Walkin’ Blues” (even with Cooder’s animated mandolin weaving its spell on one side of the stereo mix) has the sound of a late ’40s Chess release by Muddy Waters. Blind Willie McTell (“Statesboro Blues”) and Robert Johnson (“Dust My Broom”) are also represented, in what had to be one of the most quietly, defiantly iconoclastic records of 1968.

With Cranekiss, Tamaryn emerges from her past efforts in a way that’s inviting, warm-blooded, and shockingly direct. She’s made a big record, loaded with samples, synth triggers and processing that was missing from her previous efforts, pressed into service of a post-adolescent love letter to all the music that she and her collaborators (Jorge Elbrecht of Violens and Lansing-Dreiden, Shaun Durkan of Weekend) hold dear. Her most personal collection of songs to date, Cranekiss represents a long journey, and a new phase in Tamaryn’s music unfolding before you, a blood-red kaleidoscope of desire and late night abandon.

By the mid-2010s, the revivals of shoegaze and synth pop had been around for quite a while – several times longer than the styles’ original heydays, in fact – and sometimes felt overly familiar. However, Tamaryn enlivens both by combining them on Cranekiss, resulting in some of her most arresting music yet. It’s quite the departure from the distortion-laden bliss of Waves and Tender New Signs, echoing changes such as her move to New York and the addition of Weekend’s Shaun Durkan to her band. Another key collaborator is producer Jorge Elbrecht (also of Violens and Lansing-Dreiden), whose finesse with samples and keyboards lends a retro-futuristic sound, most audaciously on “Softcore,” where found sounds from porn websites and excerpts from the film Paris, Texas commingle with winding guitars to make shoegaze’s eroticism explicit in more ways than one. Interestingly, Cranekiss’ less showy juxtapositions of softness and structure are even more striking, with the album’s first three tracks capturing the sensual thrill of the best dream pop and Top 40 singles of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Sweeping and swooning, “Cranekiss” lives up to its name; “Hands All Over Me” blends caressing synths and pointed funk; and “Last” rivals other widescreen pop auteurs like M83 and White Sea. Meanwhile, the album’s more traditionally ethereal second side strengthens Tamaryn’s kinship with the Cocteau Twins and contemporaries like Pure Bathing Culture, with songs like “Sugarfix” and “Fade Away Slow” reinvigorating vintage dream pop’s glassy lucidity and fondness for gauzy imagery. In all, Cranekiss is a beautiful pop fantasia that finds Tamaryn expressing her music’s passion and sensuality in exciting new ways.

A pupil of Tchaikovsky, who called him the ‘Russian Bach’, Sergey Taneyev is best known today for his four symphonies, although he also composed a sizeable body of chamber music, including nine complete String Quartets. Quartet No. 9 is a memorably melodic work, while the beautifully crafted Quartet No. 6, his last completed quartet, is rather more austere, though marked by a playful Jig, and even more masterful in construction.

And so we come to the penultimate release in the complete string quartets by Sergey Taneyev, the Carpe Diem quartet breathing new life into forgotten music. Highly regarded in his younger days, having been a piano student of Nikolai Rubinstein and composition pupil of Tchaikovsky, he eventually became the influential Director of the Moscow Music Conservatory. It was there that his famous pupils, Rachmaninov, Gliere and Scriabin, proved his undoing. They were to bring new and hugely popular music onto the Russian scene, but their mentor could not move from the era in which he was a student. So he was to continue in an elegant view of Russian nationalism, and because he did not join in that new regime is no reason for us to forget his beautifully crafted music. Just turn to the disc’s soulful second track—the slow movement of the Ninth Quartet—and the bubbling scherzo that follows, to find the most readily attractive music ever composed for string quartet. There is, however, a problem with the numbering of the quartets, as the Ninth was among several that remained unpublished at the time of his death, and they were unfortunately given later numbers, the Sixth, in chronological order, being his last quartet. It dates from the first years of the 20th century and some twenty years after the Ninth, by which time he was often falling back on academia as the basis of music that had become rather threadbare in terms of thematic material. So here we have a strong and purposeful opening movement, that looks set fair for an imposing work, but then follows a rather uninteresting slow movement. A happy scherzo prepares for a return to the mood of the opening for the finale. With the young Carpe Diem’s obvious enthusiasm we must be most grateful for this enterprising series. © 2015 David’s Review Corner
