Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a roughly five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz.Born into a upper-middle-class family in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, Davis started on the trumpet in his early teens. He left to study at Juilliard in New York City, before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker’s bebop quintet from 1944 to 1948. Shortly after, he recorded the Birth of the Cool sessions for Capitol Records, which were instrumental to the development of cool jazz. In the early 1950s, Davis recorded some of the earliest hard bop music while on Prestige Records but did so haphazardly due to a heroin addiction. After a widely acclaimed comeback performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, he signed a long-term contract with Columbia Records, and recorded the album ‘Round About Midnight in 1955. It was his first work with saxophonist John Coltrane and bassist Paul Chambers, key members of the sextet he led into the early 1960s. During this period, he alternated between orchestral jazz collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, such as the Spanish music-influenced Sketches of Spain (1960), and band recordings, such as Milestones (1958) and Kind of Blue (1959). The latter recording remains one of the most popular jazz albums of all time, having sold over five million copies in the U.S.

No one is too small is the new project of the Maat Saxophone Quartet. The acclaimed ensemble calls on people to take action against climate change. Through a musical performance in combination with simple but powerful drawings, the ensemble aims to inspire and simplify a process that is overwhelming and hopeless for so many individuals. “We want to show that denial is not a choice, that the world needs to take urgent action and that a collective, proactive and caring attitude towards climate change will truly change the course. No one is too small to take action. No action is too small to make a difference.”

2024 on Drone Rock Records is kicking off in style with the welcome return of Psychic Lemon and their 4th studio album, ‘The Unheimlich Kingdom’. It’s been over four years since the band’s last studio album, ‘Freak Mammal’ (released at the tail end of 2019 on Drone Rock Records), and this is their first record since downsizing to a two-piece following the departure of bass player Andy Hibberd. It is the band’s darkest yet, full of unrelenting repetition and piled high with dense slabs of sound, a total contrast to the sounds of their self-titled debut vinyl release on Drone Rock Records way back in 2016.In the words of the band themselves:
“Dark days as subjects of the Unheimlich Kingdom. Disorder and decay our daily fare. Long shadows cast their cold grip over the land, darkened even more by the terror of flaming brutalisms that rise high in the sky. A cruel austere hand choked the life-breath of public services and plunges a knife into the heart of kindness. Estranged from the familiar, we shouldn’t be here. We are unwelcome. We have been downgraded and degraded. Our banks filled with other people’s food and our minds polluted with poison. Our expectations have been downsized. Zombie economics and vampire capitalism – metaphors morph into representation. Haunted by a mythic past and paralysed by an unthinkable future, as we stare out of the window, horror fictions transform into reality. Let the bodies pile high and the land sink into the sea.”

It is a grim, powerful record and perfectly encapsulates these dark and, quite frankly, depressing times. It is the sound of a band rallying against the status quo and simply stating “enough is enough”; a true reflection of a dystopian future that has already descended on us.

“‘…in my opinion, Psychic Lemon’s best yet. It showcases a band at the height of their powers who are not afraid to mix things up a bit but still retain their raison d’etre. It is a magnificent beast; muscular and powerful, borne of righteous rage. It is the sound of a band finding catharsis through music, a way of communicating their disquiet about modern life in the UK but without resorting to shouting into an echo chamber. That alone is something to be applauded. Bravo lads, bravo.”

“When they are at ease Psychic Lemon sound like a maelstrom of fury. Here they are not at ease and the damage this record will cause is immense. Embrace the agony.”

June 6, 2024 will be the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. On this day, Grammy-nominated pianist Monty Alexander will also be 80 years old. A highly symbolic historical concordance, which the great musician naturally takes up, as the name he was given is a tribute to General Montgomery, the famous liberation hero.

The recordings, most of which were made in October 2023 at Studio Sextan, capture the quintessence of two long sessions. We hear an Alexander who is more introspective than usual and sure of the time he needs to hit the right note, the note that can only be hit with a sense of confidence.

He has found partners in the brilliant young Luke Sellick and Jason Brown, his current Rhythm section, he has found partners who can keep up with his harmonic and harmonic and rhythmic digressions, always laced with the intoxicating beat of reggae and the infectious swing of swing.

Armed with an already extensive back-catalogue of stunning music, Palace return with their brand new, deeply personal, fourth studio album.

While writing the first batch of songs for the album, frontman Leo Wyndham’s partner suffered a late miscarriage, which left the band’s chief song-writer bereft and adrift. Ultrasound naturally became an open diary of their year-long struggle from devastation to deliverance. “It was incredibly hard to comprehend what had happened, how to deal with it and how to move forward,” Leo says. “The album is the journey of that absolutely earth-shattering experience – starting with a loss, then a period of processing, and then finally acceptance, release and growth. And being in awe of women within that. Their dignity, strength and courage in how they can deal with these things that feel beyond a man.”
Album opener ‘When Everything Was Lost’, is chilling ozone rock with a hint of Bon Iver, capturing what Leo calls “that initial bombshell feeling”. From there, Ultrasound picks its way through the wreckage, seeking light, with the languid and lustrous pop-gaze trio of ‘Bleach’, ‘Nightmares and Ice Cream’ and ‘Rabid Dog’. The hallucinogenic ‘Nightmares…’ was based on a dream Leo had about seeing his partner in the afterlife: “It was a very beautiful abstract thing that we were together and there was this total acceptance of what had happened and it was euphoric,” he says.

At the album’s core sit three songs of support and consolidation. ‘Make You Proud’ is about wanting to be the best version of yourself out of love for another. There’s the soulful ‘Inside My Chest’, and ‘Love Is A Precious Thing’, the album’s melodic centrepiece.

The final stretch signifies a more reflective period. ‘Say The Words’ acknowledges the societal pressures on women to raise families and their resilience in the struggles of motherhood, ‘How Far We’ve Come’ confronts ageing and mortality. ‘All We’ve Ever Wanted’ revisits the rawness of Leo’s anguish in its images of forest fires and quicksand, his desire for fatherhood still burning.

Singer Malene Mortensen has been around on the Danish scene for a decade-and-a-half gradually getting better known beyond her native land as a singer with a memorable pure-toned voice displaying a good deal of range and one who can combine Great American Songbook material with more recent repertoire in a contemporary modern-jazz style without being remotely cheesy.

But she can be a little bit too middle of the road sometimes, despite her strong technical and interpretative skills. Here with a strong empathetic core band featuring Christian McBride pianist Christian Sands, bassist Burniss Earl Travis II and, again another Christian McBride connection, Terreon ‘Tank’ Gulley on drums, the album gradually moves away from the Great American Songbook at the beginning via ‘Honeysuckle Rose,’ ‘Alone Together,’ and Bacharach/David song ‘Alfie’ to some of her own co-written songs before returning with a flourish to standards fare and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘My Favorite Things.’ Recorded in New York in March 2014 Can’t Help It could do with more of an edge and a few more risks here and there to really shift Mortensen out of her comfort zone however tasteful and polished an artist she continues to be.

On her most ambitious album yet, No One Gets Out Alive, singer-songwriter Maggie Rose proves she’s a true original. Unencumbered by genre, the album reflects Maggie’s varied influences including rock, soul, Americana, pop and folk, all colliding for a deeply satisfying listen. Recorded with members of Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit, Alabama Shakes and Gregg Allman’s band, the record was produced by GRAMMY-Award winner Ben Tanner, mixed by Bobby Holland and arranged by conductor Don Hart (Phish, Lyle Lovett). The album is an extension of Maggie’s journey as a respected fixture in the Nashville community, who has carved out an unconventional path for herself. She has shared the stage with an impressive array of artists including Kelly Clarkson, Heart, Joan Jett, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and Fitz & The Tantrums, and earned her reputation as a charismatic, dynamic live performer at countless marquis festivals including Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, and Newport Folk Fest among others.

Legendary American guitarist, composer, improviser and 20-time Grammy winner Pat Metheny announces the release of his latest album MoonDial on July 26th via BMG. As with his previous albums, One Quiet Night (2003) and What’s It All About (2011), MoonDial is a pure solo guitar album without overdubs, recorded on baritone guitar. What distinguishes MoonDial from these projects – and from everything Metheny has ever done – is that the album was conceived and recorded in the middle of another tour and will also be released during it. This unprecedented situation arose in part from his enthusiasm for the guitar itself: a custom-made nylon-stringed instrument made by Linda Manzer, a close collaborator of Metheny and one of the world’s leading luthiers.
